Canals in the 1950s-1970s

Colour photographs by Jack Parkinson

J. G. (Jack) Parkinson and his wife travelled extensively around the British canal and waterway system in the 1950s-1970s, mostly on the cruiser GREY DOVE. Jack took over 9000 colour photographs, as well as very many b/w photos and cine film, so creating an immense collection of significant historical value. All the colour photos are now in the safe hands of Online Transport Archive, and a very varied selection of about 285 has been made for this book, covering the canals from the south of England to the Scottish lowlands, including both 'narrow' and 'wide' navigations, over about 25 years.

The photos represent an era that has largely disappeared, and many scenes have changed utterly in the intervening 50-70 years (though, surprisingly, a few hardly at all). The photos will be of interest to canal and transport enthusiasts, industrial archæologists, and others who enjoy finding out about our industrial and rural past more than a half century ago.
