Monks of Adlington were part of the colourful and industrious commercial boating fraternity from the 1930s until the early 1970s when an activity that had been continued since the establishment of the canals as part of our Industrial Revolution succumbed to the ascendancy of road transport.
Norman, with the aid of recollections and records kept by Jim Monk's family, the Ashtons of Irlam and many others, has been able to recapture the aura, the ethic and, almost, the smells of an era that has passed, probably never to return.
