A Walkers Guide to the Cromford Canal

  • Author: Hugh Potter
  • Binding: Paperback
walkers guide to the cromford canal

Edited by FCC Archivist Hugh Potter with the help of Ken Brockway who advised on the route, this third edition takes on a new form as "A Walk Through History", guiding you not only along the route of the canal today, but showing you what it used to look like in the past. So much has changed on the canal since the 1960s that it is hard to imagine what it was like prior to parts of it being sold off, demolished, opencast or infilled. Although the majority was abandoned in 1944, little changed until the mid-1960s when British Waterways decided to dispose of as much of the canal as possible. They had no regard for its future, except the top 5½ miles from Ambergate to Cromford which remain mercifully intact thanks to British Waterways donating it to Derbyshire CountyCouncil.
