In the 1950s, Vivian Bird set out to travel by working boat from Birmingham to the Thames, Humber, Mersey and Severn. His travels included a trip to Stanlow in tank boats, Cardiff to Worcester with 130tons of cheese and Nottingham to Hull by tug. With a journalist's keen eye, he records details of canal craft and their operation.
